Roll Call ($) reports that the Federal Election Commission (“FEC”) has initiated an audit of the President’s 2008 campaign.
FEC Audits are suppose to be confidential until the auditors are prepared to present their draft Final Audit Report to the Commission. This begs the question why the campaign or another source close to the matter elected to publicly disclose the existence of the proceedings.
If the President’s 2008 campaign is being audited, we can expect that the matter will be disclosed by the FEC when the auditors present their draft Final Audit Report to the Commission. Under recent changes to the FEC’s audit procedures, the campaign’s attorneys will have an opportunity to present oral arguments and answer Commissioner questions before the Commission adopts the Final Audit Report in an open meeting.
