White House, Democrats And Their Soft Money Allies Continue Smear Campaign Despite No Evidence

CBS News reports that the White House, Congressional Democrats and their soft money allies are continuing their smear campaign against the U.S. Chamber of Commerce despite the fact that senior White House officials admitted over the weekend that there is no evidence to support their false claims.

Democrats and their supporters appear convinced that tying Republican outside groups to shadowy foreign donors is a successful strategy for rallying their base in the midterm elections. The repeated attacks come despite the fact that Democrats do not have solid proof to back up the allegations.

The New York Times reported this weekend that senior White House officials admitted that they do not have any evidence to support the smear campaign against the Chamber.

White House officials acknowledged Friday that they had no specific evidence to indicate that the chamber had used money from foreign entities to finance political attack ads.

“The president was not suggesting any illegality,” Bob Bauer, the White House counsel, said.

Now, the AP just published an article taking the White House and Democrats to task for spreading false allegations about the Chamber.  The AP reports: “Trouble is, they’re providing no evidence.”

The Wall Street Journal sums up this disgraceful smear campaign by focusing on the use of federal government resources to stifle political debate in this country.

If at first you don’t succeed, get some friends in high places to shut your opponents up. That’s the latest Washington power play, as Democrats and liberals attack the Chamber of Commerce and independent spending groups in an attempt to stop businesses from participating in politics.

It appears that the Democrats will not let the facts or the law get in the way of making false statements about a private organization exercising its First Amendment rights.
